Question

NMR data for the 'H NMR spectra of a salen derivative, compound 1, in D6-DMSO (deuterated DMSO) containing TMS (tetramethylsilane) are given inTable 1. You should refer to the numbering

system shown in the salen derivative structure (1) in your discussion. (a) Considering the structure of compound (1), discuss whether the number of proton signals observed in the 1H NMR spectrum and their relative integrals are what you would expect for this ligand. (You do not need to discuss multiplicity in your answer). (b) What can you deduce from the fact that the peak in the 1H NMR spectrum at13.50 ppm disappears on shaking the solution with D2O? (c) Assign the peaks in the 1H NMR spectrum for the compound 1. Comment on how the multiplicity of these peaks can enable you to suggest possibilities for their assignment. (d) Would you expect to observe tenting for the signals at 8.05 and 6.79 ppm.Explain your reasoning?(2 moulio)
