Part 2: Reflective Questions. You must use examples from your observation. (Minimum of 3 single spaced typed pages).

PART – 2 1. In this activity, the teacher was teaching the children how to count by tens. The teacher had them line up on one side of the room and gave each student a plastic egg. She then had them run around collecting eggs with higher numbers on them. When all of the children had collected an egg with a number that was higher then theirs, they exchanged their egg for one containing another number. They then repeated this procedure until everyone had been given an egg containing their own number: 1-10. Once everyone had gone through this process, they returned to their original starting positions and counted off by tens until everyone has been called out by name. (undefined [Tech Fellows], 2014) 2. I felt that the teacher's supervision of the children during this activity was fairly effective. She was able to keep track of all of the children, and it seemed to me that she had a good idea of what each child was doing at any given time. She did an excellent job making sure that no one was left behind or confused about what they were doing, and even went so far as to help individuals who became stuck with a difficult number. 3. In this activity, there are 10 children participating. If I were the teacher, I would do the same activity with 5 children. This is because it's important to make sure all students are engaged and participating in the lesson at hand when learning how to count by tens. If there were more than 10 children participating in this lesson, it would be difficult for them to keep track of where they were supposed to be standing or what number they had been given. 4. I observed that the children were very excited to participate in this activity. They were eager to get their numbers and collect all of the eggs with higher numbers on them. I noticed that some children did not wait for the teacher to call out their number, but instead ran around and collected any egg with a higher number on it. 5. I observed that the students interacted with each other in a very positive way. They were all very helpful and patient with each other, as they had to wait for their turn to go and collect an egg that was higher than their own. The teacher also made sure that everyone understood what they were doing, so there were no mistakes or confusion on the part of any student. 6. I observed that the teacher was very patient and kind with the children. She spoke to each child individually, even though they were all engaged in different activities. She also made sure to use their names when calling them out. I could tell that she had a good rapport with each student because they responded well to her instructions, and they all seemed eager to learn and participate. 7. a) Teacher asks open-ended questions about the activity. She asks, "Who will be first?" and "Who will be 2nd?" She also asks why the children chose their numbers and what they think will happen when they exchange eggs. b) The teacher models how to say "bye" to each child before the game starts and gives praise and reinforcement when necessary. She encourages students to say "bye" at the beginning of the game, which gives them practice with numbers and saying goodbye in a group setting. Finally, she encourages children who may not normally participate in group activities to join in this activity. c) Give each child a plastic egg with their number written on it. So they all run around collecting eggs with higher numbers on them. When everyone has an egg containing their own number, they go back to their original starting positions and count off by tens until everyone has been called out by name. 8. Children learn about the concept of place value by collecting eggs with numbers on them, then exchanging those eggs for ones containing a higher number. Children also practice counting and making groups of tens by calling out their names when they have been given an egg containing their own number. 9. Teachers adapt activities to meet students' needs in a variety of ways. Younger students may be given adaptive materials, such as plastic eggs with numbers on them, and asked to collect eggs with higher numbers. The teacher will call out which numbers each child should be collecting, so that all of the children have an egg containing their own number (1-10). Teachers may also count off by tens until everyone has been called out by name. With more mature or skilful children, teachers may not use adaptive materials or activity structure to meet their individual needs. For example, in a counting by tens activity, students would be asked to collect plastic eggs with numbers on them and exchange their egg for one containing another number (i.e., 1 for 2) when they have collected an egg containing a higher number than theirs. 10. For the block area, students could create a house for their plastic eggs to live in. In dramatic play, students could use their plastic eggs as baby dolls. For outdoor activities, students could collect their plastic eggs from nature and bring them back home. In art activities, students could paint their plastic eggs using watercolours or finger paints. 11. Based on the activity presented to the children, we can infer that they developed a number of different skills. Social skills were likely developed as they interacted with their peers and teachers. Language and literacy development were also likely enhanced as they were able to exchange information about their egg collection with each other, as well as with the teacher. Math and science skills were developed through the use of numbers in counting by tens and the exchange of information about egg collections between students. Physical development was also likely improved by moving around during this activity. 12. I would change the way children are allowed to interact with one another. In my observation, it appeared that the children were not allowed to exchange eggs with one another. I believe this is an important part of the learning process and should be encouraged by the teacher. The teacher should also encourage children to help one another find the correct colored eggs with higher numbers. This will help them learn how to work together and show empathy towards one another.
