Task 1
You are an engineer trainee at a start-up design and analysis company. In order for you
to join an analysis team, your line manager requires you to demonstrate your
competence in finding solutions to problems involving application of mathematical
techniques to solve engineering problems.
As an apprentice software engineer you have been asked to collect data regarding the
number of employees and job roles in a company and draw up a table to record the
following information;

angle used to construct a pie chart for each job role.
Using the data in the table construct:
a) A pie chart showing job role and percentage of employees, and
b) A horizontal bar chart showing job role and number of employees.
Task 2
Show the method of calculating the percentage of employees and the angle in degrees
used for the pie chart.
As a quality assurance engineer, you have been tasked with checking the diameters of a
batch of electric motor shafts for compliance.

Using suitable measuring equipment inspect and measure the shafts then record the
data in an appropriate table.
From the data:
a) Identify and state the lower limit of the data
b) Identify and state the upper limit of the data
c) Calculate the range of the data
d) Draw up a frequency distribution
e) Produce a histogram

Task 3
Data from individualised tables.
As an engineering quality manager, you have been asked to produce a graphical
presentation of a production run of Resistors. The product has been produced in
batches of 1000 for an electronics company over the last two years. The number of
batches produced each week is shown in the table below.

Use the data in the table to:
a) Draw up a frequency distribution, and a cumulative frequency distribution
using 7 or 8 classes showing how you obtained the class interval.
b) Produce a histogram and from it determine the mode and mean value.
c) Produce an ogive and use it to determine the second quartile value, i.e. the
median.
d) Draw vertical lines on the histogram to show the relative positions of the
mean, median and mode.
e) Complete the table with your three calculated values and match the
definitions A, B, C and the explanations D, E and F with the three measures of
central tendency.
