Pipe Flow

Fuel oil is flowing through a piping system. The piping is schedule 40 steel piping. Dimensions for this standard sizing of piping can be found here: standard pipe sizes. Note that 1/8 NPS (nominal pipe size) is not actually 1/8 inch in outside or inside diameter. You must look up the exact dimensions. The schedule number refers to the wall thickness. The most common schedules of pipe are 40 and 80, with 80 having thicker walls and thus being able to withstand higher stresses. The crude oil, specific gravity of 0.782, flows in through 2 ½inch NPS schedule 40 pipe (A) at 35 gal/min. It flows into a larger 3½ inch NPS schedule 40 pipe (B) and then splits evenly into two- 1 ½ inch NPS schedule 40 pipes (C).

Calculate

a. the volumetric flow rate in each pipe (m³/s).

b. the mass flow rate in each pipe (kg/s).

c. the velocity in each pipe (ft/s).
