Question

Please write a four page double spaced essay that responds to one of the following prompts. Baudelaire often refers, either directly or obliquely, to poets: sometimes he speaks of "the poet," sometimes he discusses himself, sometimes he deals with poetic inspiration. Write an essay on how he deals with poets in any one or two of the assigned poems. In what ways does he speak about the poet or poets in the poem or poems you're looking at? What motivates these poets—what are they looking for, what are they after? Does Baudelaire view the poet in a positive light? A negative light? Somewhere in between? Why? In Roberto Bolaño's story "Henri Simon Leprince," the eponymous protagonist makes several realisations about himself. What are these realisations? How does he arrive at them? Do they help him in any way? Why or why not? When he realises something about himself, does he have any power to change it? Why or why not? How would you characterise the relationship between A and B in Bolaño's story “A Literary Adventure"? In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different? B undertakes a series of actions, all of them with A in mind. What motivates these actions? What do they reveal about B? Are they linked with his profession? Whichever prompt you choose, you should make an argument. Don't simply answer the questions in the prompt; rather, try to think about them within the framework of the argument you are making. (It may be helpful to include, in your introduction, a sentence beginning with the words "In this essay, I argue that . . .”.) Back up your argument with plenty of evidence from the text (in the form of quotations and page references). Make sure you privilege analysis over description-in other words, privilege "how" and "why" questions over "what" questions. This is not a research essay, so you don't need to bring in any external references, though you are free to do so if you like. Double-space the essay, and use a proper academic font (Times New Roman 12-point is always a good idea) and appropriate margins (1-inch). Number your pages, and write the question to which you are responding at the beginning of the essay. We will grade the paper based on the extent to which you do the following: Follow basic assignment instructions. Eliminate errors (e.g. spelling, grammar) from the assignment. Make a strong argument that includes interesting and original observations, and back up your claims with evidence. Make strong use of the text, bringing in references and quotations, and contextualising them as part of the larger work. (Remember, it is virtually impossible for you to obtain a good grade without the use of quotations and references.) Analyse / interpret rhetorical features of the text (as appropriate). Organise the essay well, staying on track with your argument. Write well, in a sophisticated, concise, and elegant way, avoiding clichéd and casual language. Make sure your essay conforms to a specific formatting and style guide (MLA, CMS, or APA).
