The mechanical system shown in Figure P2.16 is driven by the applied force

fa(t). When x₁ = x₂ = 0, the springs are neither stretched nor compressed.

a) Draw the free-body diagrams and write the differential equations of motion

for the two masses in terms of x₁ and x₂.

b) Find x₁, and x20, the constant displacements of the masses caused by

the gravitational forces when fa(t) = 0 and when the system is in static

equilibrium.
