A cylindrical pressure vessel 10 m long has closed ends, a wall thickness of 5 mm, and an inner

diameter of 3m. The vessel is filled with gas to a pressure of 2 MPa. The material of the pressure

vessel is made of 250-grade steel with yield strength of oy=1791 MPa.

a. Determine principal normal stresses (01, 02, 03)

b. Find the safety factor against yielding by employing:

i) Maximum shear stress (Tresca) criterion.

ii) Octahedral shear stress (von Mises) criterion.
