Question

Question 2: Consider an ideal gas that is confined within a vertical cylinder

of radius R. Show that the number of molecules in the gas per unit area (R²)

decreases with increasing height above the bottom of the cylinder; assume that

the temperature of the gas is constant throughout the cylinder. I suggest you

approach this problem by first determining the partition function of the gas

from which you can calculate the chemical potential.
