In this lesson, you will review the parts of an argument, and you will begin planning to
write an argument essay by establishing a claim and counterclaim.
Your argument essay will address one of the following questions:
1. Does our state do enough to prevent distracted driving?
2. Can a PSA help reduce the number of distracted driving incidents?
Assignment
Later in the module, you will write the essay entirely. However, For this lesson, you will
only complete Part One of the Argument Organizer.
Objectives

As you begin to formulate your argument, you will include a claim, a counterclaim, and several reasons and pieces of evidence within your essay. This chart d
provides examples of each component of the argument.
Claim
.Thesis or the main point the writer argues
• Forms the foundation of the argument
Counterclaim
Example from PSA:
"Distracted driving kills. Safe driving starts with you."

Opposing viewpoint; disagrees with the claim

"But, her mentality was it wasn't gonna happen to her, because she
looked me right in the eye and said, 'Dad, no I'm not.' Cause that happe
to other people."

Counterclaim
Reasons and Evidence

Example from PSA:

And I said, 'I want to know if she was texting and driving.
And he said she was."
A solid argument will not only recognize the opposition by including the counterclaim; it will also refute the counterclaim. Check out this video to see how you can refute the
