Semester 1, 2023-2024 Lord of The Flies - Discovery Questions ch. 6-7 Literary Devices: For each quote, 1) tell me what literary device Golding employs, 2) explain why you think the quote demonstrates that device by referencing specific words, AND 3) explain Golding's purpose for using the device. How might it enhance theme, mood, characters, etc.? "Soon the darkness was full of claws, full of the awful unknown and menace” (99). • "A stain in the darkness, a stain that was Jack, detached itself and began to draw away...The stain vanished. Another took its place" (121). Chapter 6: "Beast from Air" In order to earn full credit, answer the following questions with accuracy, in complete sentences, and with detail. Make it evident that you read the chapter(s). 1. What is the beast from the air? How is it appropriate that the boys mistake it for a beast? 2. What do Sam and Eric tell the boys they have seen? What does Sam and Eric's description of the beast tell us about human psychology? How do the other boys respond to them, especially Simon? 3. Why do Ralph and Jack decide to go find the beast? 4. Why do you think Ralph doesn't really expect to encounter the beast? 5. Everyone wants to be rescued, so why do the other boys not work harder at it? 6. How do most of the boys react to their discovery of the "castle"? What foreshadowing takes place at the end of the novel? Semester 1, 2023-2024 Chapter 7: "Shadows and Tall Trees" 1. What embarrassing thing does Ralph say to himself near the beginning of the chapter that he's afraid someone might have overheard? What does he mean by it? What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? 2. What does Simon say to Ralph that makes them both smile? Think carefully about Simon's choice of words - do you think it foreshadows something that might happen later in the novel? 3. How does Ralph become immersed in the irrational lust to injure and kill? Why should this be worrisome to us readers? 4. Why is it especially horrific and savage when Robert says, “You want a real pig...because you've got to kill him," and Jack replies, "Use a little-un"? What is he implying? How does this connect to Golding's assertion that humans have a capacity for evil? 5. Later, Ralph asks Jack, “Why do you hate me?" What answer does Jack give? (FIND A QUOTE). How do the other boys react? 6. Why do you suppose Golding lets the reader know at the outset that it is the pilot and his parachute, not a beast, that the boys find? Would there not have been greater suspense if the reader knew no more than the boys did? 7. Why do you think Golding plotted the story so that the boys would go up the mountain in the dark?
