Question

Step 1: Choose an issue related to the politics of reproduction. To begin, you must identify an issue related to the politics of reproduction that your poster will address. You can choose an issue that we've learned about in this class, or you can opt for an issue that we haven't discussed but that interests you. You are not required to do extensive outside research for this assignment, but you may find it helpful to read up on your topic before creating your poster. Issues related to the politics of reproduction include, but are not limited to: abortion rights; high costs of assisted reproductive technologies (like IVF); high rates of Black maternal mortality; genocide and settler colonialism; the rights of disabled parents and/or the parents of disabled children; environmental racism; family planning programs in the Global South; food and housing insecurity; intersex justice; LGBTQ parenting rights; pre-natal genetic testing; sex education for adolescents & young adults; transphobia in the healthcare system; sterilization abuse in prisons or detention centers. Step 2: Decide who your target audience is and where your poster would be displayed. Next, you will need to decide who you are making your poster for and where you would want to hang it. You will then design your poster with that audience in mind. Knowing who you are "speaking to" will help you figure out the best way to convey your message (i.e. which words to use, which colors to choose, which images to include, etc.) Possible audiences/locations include, but are not limited to: a specific building on our campus (the SAC, your residence hall, where you have lab, etc.); the hallway of your high school; a billboard in the neighborhood where you grew up; NYC subway cars/stations; your doctor's office; a specific concert or arts festival; a particular coffee shop or bookstore./nStep 3: Make your poster. Then, you'll need to make your poster. Your task is to educate your imagined audience on how to think about your chosen issue through the lens of reproductive justice. You'll want to look back at the readings and your notes from the first part of this unit to refresh your memory on the reproductive justice framework. How can this framework help your audience think about the issue you've chosen in a new way? Some of you may design posters that raise awareness about your issue and highlight its importance for reproductive justice. Others will create posters that propose ideas for how we might address the issue in ways that are in line with the reproductive justice framework. Note: You can create a digital poster on your computer or other device, or you can make an actual poster by hand. Either way, you will upload your final poster to Brightspace. If you make an actual poster, you can simply take a photo of what you made and upload that to the site. Step 4: Write a brief statement describing your approach to this assignment. Finally, you will write a 300- to 400-word statement describing your approach to this assignment. First, explain why you decided to make a poster about this particular issue for the audience you selected. Second, tell us about your design process. Why do you think the wording of your poster and its aesthetic style will be effective in educating your imagined audience? Third, discuss at least two assigned texts (readings, films, or podcasts) from Weeks 6, 7, 8, & 9 that you drew upon to create your poster.
