Competency 1: Strategic Case Analysis
Print
Strategic Case Analysis (100 points, 10-12 pages)
TASK: Throughout your courses in ORGL, we have discussed organizations. As you
work through the teacher prep emphasis work, the organization for this assignment
refers to an ISD. You will select a school site or campus within an ISD with which
you've worked OR you can choose another campus within an ISD for this project.
You will be completing a case study of the campus to determine its strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats in order to propose recommendations to the
ISD Administration and School Board regarding educational reform for the school
site. This case study with recommendations will demonstrate your ability to
synthesize and align learning and skills developed throughout coursework in this
program.
YOUR ROLE: Educational Consultant
AUDIENCE: ISD Administration and School Board
Additional Support:
You will be creating and using a SWOT Analysis with this assignment, which was
covered in ORGL 4341. But see videos below if you need a refresher.

Module 1: Case Analysis Paper
PROCESS:
Select a campus or school site within an organization (ISD) from one of the two
leadership interviews (from Capstone 1) to conduct your strategic case analysis. Or,
you can select a campus from a totally different ISD that you have never examined or
studied before, particularly if you are interested in teaching or working in that ISD.
Tip: Complete this within the first week of the term.
Research the organization and develop external and ORGL program references to
support your analysis. You will want to drill down from the overall ISD to find
specific data about your campus. Provide an overview of your school; demographics,
a list of programs, and the make-up of the classrooms (i.e. number of students,
number of students in ESL, GT, free/reduced lunch, and other supportive
interventions.)
Tips: Complete this within the first two weeks of the term; Maintain records of
sources from your research so you can cite them in the proposal narrative with in-text
parenthetical citations and a reference page; Begin to analyze and evaluate existing
information on the ISD in order to align with a SWOT analysis and offer
recommendations; Explore these recommended links for data mining:
Greatschools.org or TexasTribune.)
Using your research, clearly delineate an alignment between the information from
your data mining of the school/campus within the ISD and sort the information into
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Complete a preliminary SWOT
Analysis.
Tips: As you consider your SWOT analysis, be sure to connect and align language
from your research to your proposed recommendations later in the case study; Begin
to consider the non-examples of examples of viable recommendations in the table
below.
Complete a first draft of your paper in the format that follows.
Do a self-assessment of your first draft using the Evaluation rubric listed below.
Make revisions as necessary based on your rubric-driven self-assessment. FORMAT: Each subsection listed below should have an APA-style subheading.
Please adhere to page requirements. The subsections of this paper should align and
transition from one section to the next in order to "tell a story" of the school campus
from the ISD and support the recommendations and proposals you are making to the
ISD
upper administration and School Board.
ISD OVERVIEW: An overview of the organization- its origin, purpose, and history,
with attention to the specific campus site you are analyzing. Any other significant
facts that will be foundational or in alignment with the SWOT analysis or the
recommendations can be included as well. Remember to cite your sources about the
ISD. This serves as part of the introduction of the proposal and your
recommendations. Maximum two pages.
ISD STRUCTURE: A summary of the organizational structure. How is the
organization structured? How will that structure change over the coming years?
How does your campus fit within the ISD structure? What challenges exist with the
current organization structure? Any other significant facts about its structure or
specific campus that will be foundational or in alignment with the SWOT analysis or
the recommendations can be included as well. Maximum two pages.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Propose four different recommendations for your campus
around organizational structure, health, or strategy. Each of the recommendations
should be specific in nature, detailed in terms of implementation, and supported by
concepts or theories you studied in the ORGL program. Examples of the course
material include Data-Driven Decision Making, Change Management, Ethics, and
Process Improvement. Each recommendation should align with something you
uncovered in the SWOT analysis. Each recommendation should be a MINIMUM of
TWO PAGES.
CONCLUSION: In general, what would be the benefits of these recommendations to
the ISD? Add at least one final paragraph that summarizes the campus/school site
recommendations you've proposed as a means of educational reform and campus
effectiveness. This final paragraph should be persuasive in that the audience will
understand the importance of your recommendations.
REFERENCES: Using APA-style format, provide a listing of all the references to
your research, making sure your intext parenthetical citations point to the appropriate
references in the analysis. Six references minimum are required for the paper. Most
superior papers have significantly more.
APPENDIX: Include the SWOT Grid only in the appendix of the paper.
