Question

Study 1 Summary

Study 1 tested 921 students at the University of Virginia. The researchers asked people to check

off how many of the following activities they liked (with a yes/no response). There were three

general activities: walking, running, and biking. There were three ocean-related activities:

swimming, sailing, and kayaking. And there were three mountain-related activities: skiing, rock-

climbing, and mountain biking. Each person got one score for each category of activities. Each

person also filled out a questionnaire called the "Big Five," which measured their extroversion

with two items, answered with a 5-point scale. The reported correlation between extroversion

and liking for the ocean was r= .18 (p < .01).

Study 1 Questions

1-1. What does the correlation mean in this example? Is this relationship strong or

weak?

1-2. Sketch a scatterplot of this correlation on a well-labeled graph. If you sketch on

paper, take a picture of your graph. You can insert your picture into the document

with your answers or you can upload the picture to your assignment separately.

• 1-3. What does p < 0.01 mean in this result? They did not report the 95% CI, but you

can compute it here using information from the paragraph above and this web

calculator: http://vassarstats.net/rho.htmlLinks to an external site.. (What will you use

for N-the number of scores in the correlation?) What do you get for the 95% CI?
