Question

The IR spectrum of compound XY3, where each X-Y bond is identical, hasabsorptions at 480, 691 and 1449 cm¹ only. (i)Show how the IR data can be used to distinguish whether the compound has a trigonal pyramidal or trigonal planar geometry. (ii) How would the IR spectrum differ if the compound had the other geometry? (iii) Would the Raman spectra of XY3 differ for the two geometries? Explain your answer.
