Traffic Impact Study

The project consists of three distinct parts as described below:
PART 1: Field Observation of Entering and Exiting Trips
Each team should count the number of vehicles, walking and bicycle trips entering and exiting their designated site between the hours of 4 and 6 PM on any weekday afternoon. Most sites have only one entrance and exit, so it should be possible for one person at a time to do the observation, in other words, you may do it in shifts. Storrs Commons and the IPB are the exception; these might require two observers to get all of the access points. Tally all entering and exiting trips in 15-minute periods according to the categories in the attached table. If your team is unable to find a weekday afternoon when you can all count, you may also do the count during the morning peak period from 7 to 9 am or on a Saturday between 10 am and 12 noon - please talk to the instructor if you need to do this. There is a data collection
table worksheet attached at the end of this assignment for you to use for your field observations.
PART 2: Comparison with ITE Trip Rates
Once you have completed your observation of trips, find the peak hour entering and exiting trip volume for your generator, that is, the total count in the highest consecutive series of four 15-minute counts. Then estimate the peak hour entering and exiting volume according to the procedures in Trip Generation for the peak hour of the generator (Why is this the correct rate?). Excerpts that you will need from this manual are provided on HuskyCT in the folder titled "ITE Trip Generation." In order to apply the ITE trip generation formulae, you will need information about the size of your site; here are the sizes of each site:

PART 3: Discussion
Compare the observed and estimated values of entering and exiting trips. Consider the assumptions and source of the data for the estimation procedure as well as unique characteristics of your observation site (i.e., location near a college campus and high school).
REPORT FORMAT
Each group will turn in a written project report on or before the indicated due date in the form of a laboratory report that includes the following sections (each part will contribute to the grade as indicated). Please do not write more than 10 pages of double-spaced text (not including tables, figures, drawings and other exhibits).
(10%) Introduction - describe the problem you were asked to solve.
(10) Study location - describe your study site and its relative location and access to the road network, including an inventory sketch (plan or layout) depicting the location of the site you studied and its access intersections.
(10) Data collection - describe your data collection procedure and itemize the quantities you observed. (10) Data tables - present all of the data you collected. You may list the data in an appendix, but please give summary information in the text of the report and be sure to refer to the data in the appendix. (10) Analysis method - describe your analysis method, including equations or other procedures you followed.
(10) Analysis results - show your results in an appropriate table or figure in the text, along with your calculations, which may be placed in an appendix (be sure to refer to the appendix). (10) Discussion - discuss your analysis findings according to the guide above. (10) Conclusions - give a brief summary of the project: statement of the problem, data collected, analysis method and results, and summary of your discussion.
In addition, your project report will be graded on clarity of verbal expression and use of graphics (10% each). Please bind your report with nothing more than a staple in the upper left-hand corner.
