Unit 9 Summary Journal Entry By the end of this unit you need to reflect on the learning experience in the overall module and how you will be able to apply it to your personal and/or professional life.

There are certain readings which not only allow one to gain more knowledge but also allow one to gain new perspectives. The readings in this module helped me in the same way. The key things which I learned in this module are all related to getting better in personal as well as professional life. I learnt that in order to be a better performer, one has to manage his/her emotions and be more aware of others’ emotions. The ‘managerial control’ aspect taught me how to use a stick and carrot approach as the situation demands and as a manager, one has to be open to different ways of managing. Another key thing was with regards to leadership, where a leader should be open to adapt based on different situations, a leader should be authentic wherein s/he is able to follow ethics and be true to his/her words. Different leadership styles made for an interesting and insightful reading. Similarly different management styles gave a new perspective on how to manage employees. The learning from this module has helped me to gain more insights on how to approach any task. When I talk about my personal life, the learnings from this module have helped me to be more in control of my emotions. One of the examples of the same is my enhanced ability to not get frustrated in face of difficulties as well as becoming less reactive to other people’s emotional outbursts. That is, I am consciously trying to keep my emotions in check and at the same time I am trying to go beyond people’s emotional outbursts and try to identify the reasoning behind those outbursts. Similarly, when I talk about the impact of these learnings in my professional life, I believe I have gained a logical edge to my thinking where I no longer looks at assignments or projects as work. For example, this very assignment, I have looked at it as a way to self-reflect on the areas where I have gained the most owing to the learnings from this module, similarly, I have started to approach different projects with a logical reasoning wherein I look at those projects and see what is the purpose of those projects, what can I gain out of those projects which can help me in my professional journey. These learnings have helped me to develop a focus on the kind of performance I want to bring in any career I am working, that is these learnings have helped me to focus on traits such as leadership styles, emotional intelligence, management styles etc. which can give me an edge in any career I pursue. One way in which I think these learnings can become more insightful is if these were to have simulations attached with them, where one gets a chance to use these learnings in a scenario with positive or negative consequences as that would have enhanced the experience.
