In year 1 you have designed relatively small proposals and primarily worked in groups. Design Studio 2 develops on the design introduction undertaken in the integrated design project 1, and allows investigation and design which will further develop your analytical, technical and creative skills. An individual project that will allow an understanding of the needs of users, the impact of site conditions and context, technical requirements, and aesthetic considerations. Successful completion of the project will demonstrate your enhanced knowledge and understanding of architectural and engineering design as creative and technical disciplines. As part of this you will complete these objectives: • • • • • • Carry out a group task to understand the site conditions and local context analysis Develop an understanding of precedent and technical study of residential developments. Develop your own individual interpretation of the brief using your understanding of site and user requirements; Develop outline proposal options for the design scheme, using these to test ideas for site and brief responses; Develop strategies and proposals for spatial and aesthetic solutions alongside those for environmental control systems and structural design; Complete detailed proposals and demonstrate communication skills through graphic presentation of drawn materials and a project report. Learning modes and assessment, teaching team. The module includes group and individual work with lectures and tutorials, using investigative and creative processes as part of a design project. Assessment is of creative and analytical material and its presentation. The teaching team within the School is о Yasar Awais y.awais@leeds.ac.uk - Module leader & architecture elements Professor Simon Rees - S.J.Rees@leeds.ac.uk - Building physics elements Dr Michele Mak – M.W.T.Mak@leeds.ac.uk - Structural elements о Dr Sally Shazad - S.Shahzad@leeds.ac.uk - Architecture elements / support Additional support is provided by four architect practitioner visiting tutors. 4 The Brief: CIVE2860 Design Studio 2 Module Guide Gils thwaite Ln Kirk Hammerton Beck Gilsthwaite tn Gils thwaite Ln Kirk Hammerton Beck The project is based on a development scenario for a suburban house in the Village of Kirk Hammerton. The outline brief is to develop proposals for a residential dwelling with a maximum floor area of 200sqm over three floors. (00 Ground / 01 First / 02 Second) The site contains six development plots and each student is allocated a plot on the development site. You are required to develop a client brief, design the house and its external spaces (front and rear garden) are to be designed as part of the proposal. 5
