When having interactions with family, friends, or colleague's that have different worldviews than mine, I stick to a set of guidelines that creates understanding and maintains a level of respect within this relationship. In these situations, I make sure that I am active listening. Making sure that my first action is not to instantly dispute or dismiss their perspective, my goal is to understand their world view by listening to their point of view, beliefs, values, and experiences. This Creates the feel of respect for their point of view, this also gives me the opportunity to identify common ground for a constructive conversation. I also approach our disagreement with humility. Understanding that my worldviews may not contain truth in its entirety. I keep an open mind to the possibility of learning from their perspective. When entering these conversations with a calm and composed demeanor, you create a more rational exchange of ideas. This can increase the chances of finding common ground or reaching a mutually acceptable resolution. "These guidelines, rooted in principles of active listening, humility, empathy, and emotional regulation, contribute to building and maintaining healthy relationships despite differing worldviews. Research in conflict management suggests that adopting such strategies leads to more effective communication, greater relationship satisfaction, and enhanced conflict resolution skills" (Fisher, Ury, & Patton, 2011). Also, I want to use empathy in navigating conflicting worldviews. When I put myself in the other person's shoes and I recognize the validity of their emotions and concerns, I create a supportive atmosphere conducive to a productive conversation. By using empathy, it can create a mutual understanding and strengthens a interpersonal connection, even in the mist of conflicting world views. In addition, my goal is to keep my emotions separate in these conversations. When allowing your emotions to interfere with these conversations, it can create conflict and make it difficult to be rational.
