W5 Activity: Close Reading Your activity is to practice "close reading" of a written text from this week's lesson. You will need a printed copy of your text for this activity. If you do not have a printer at home, just ask me and I will print whichever text you choose. Steps: 1) Select a text (eg. a short story, a poem or song lyrics) from Week 5, Lesson B and ask me to print it for you or print it at home. 2) Review Week 5, Lesson A for strategies and the Glossary of Narrative Terms resource so you have a better sense of what you are looking for when you highlight and annotate your text. [Note: The glossary will contain terms you find both familiar and unfamiliar. Don't get too overwhelmed with unfamiliar terms - the purpose of this exercise is to remind you of terms that you already know to see if you can add them to your annotations.] 3) Highlight and annotate your text. Add annotations where you see anything important to the story you're reading. Look for anything you feel is important to the story and helps you better understand the story. For example: Try to apply some of the literary terms from the glossary to the story (aim to apply 5+ terms) Look up unfamiliar words and annotate their definitions Look for turning points in the story Look for the main message of the story 4) Write a short paragraph that reflects on the process of close reading and how it helped you better understand the story. What are the key points that you took away from the story after the close reading?
