"Dear Dr. Seiger-Gardner, I have a 4-yr-old daughter, Katy, who has recently been diagnosed with Developmental Language Disorders (DLD). We are a bilingual home. My wife and I are fluent in English and Mandarin and we communicate with our children is both languages. Also live with us are my wife's parents, who speak only mandarin. I should note that they are the ones who take care of the kids during the day when my wife and I are at work. When I told Katy's teacher that she was diagnosed with a language disorder and will start to receive speech-language services, she recommended that we stop talking to Katy in Mandarin and focus only on teaching her English. I seek your advice. Should we stop communicating in Mandarin to Katy? Should we communicate at home only in English?
