Question

What about the origins of psychological measurement most surprises you and why? The above line is what is to be written about. The below is the reading and videos that the question is from. Psychological measurement has, like the rest of psychology, changed significantly since its inception more than a century ago. Most notably, psychological measurement has followed the rest of the field by transitioning from being based on theories developed from the observations of one or two individuals (e.g. Sigmund Freud), to being based on scientific research and evidence. This reliance on scientific evidence has led to much more reliable and valid measures for testing intelligence, academic achievement, personality, and psychopathology. However, the measures we have today are still imperfect and there are still many issues facing the field today including the widespread public use of non-scientific personality tests (e.g. Myers-Briggs) to the miscategorization of mental health disorders. The readings and videos in this unit will provide an understanding of how far we have come in our measurement of psychological constructs and provide a foundation for you to think critically about where we are and where change is still needed as you progress through subsequent units. https://youtu.be/ NQqSnkl32A https://youtu.be/1ycNtfy1f34 https://youtu.be/UiY6wr--0dE
