Why might we describe the Roman Empire as "multicultural"?

The Roman empire is considered as a multicultural empire due to many reasons. The Roman empire was inherently a syncretic empire formed on the base of different cultures. An example of this was the worship of Egyptian gods in the roman territorial areas especially Isis (Brooks, 2019, p.165-85). In a similar sense the Roman conquests resulted in a common cultural exchange where the conquered territories used to retain their cultures. Cross cultural exchanges and the multicultural character of the empire can be found in the racial identities of prominent people of Rome. For example Apulieus who was a famous satirist was of North African descent (Brooks, 2019, p.165-85).

Moving forward to the influence of cultures on the Roman empire the two most prominent cultural influences were Greece and Egypt. A prominent example of use of greek Architecture columns in Roman Architecture such as the Colosseum (Brooks, 2019, p. 165-85). Similarly the Egyptian goods were worshipped in many parts of Rome, Isis being the most prominent one (Brooks, 2019, p.165-85). On the whole the society of Rome was a multicultural diversified society with different cultures thriving in harmony with each other.
