Why or why not? – Essay Perspectives Thesis statement: In a democracy, young people should actively participate in the voting process with the same enthusiasm seen in the older population. This is because for proper governance and democratic administration of a country, the citizens must take part in the process of governance. Youth are the beacons of a country’s future and must choose their leaders wisely. Democratic participation implies the rights of citizens to participate in the governance process and secure the future of a country. It is necessary that young people vote as much as the elderly because they help in steering the developmental trajectory of their country. Rekker (2022) argues that young people are sensitive to electoral trends that influence older citizens too. Young voters should be regarded as important drivers of electoral volatility. Young people form the demographic dividend of a country and contribute towards the working force for economic leverage and growth. Therefore, their participation in the electoral process matters a lot (Rekker 2022). Moreover, when young people vote, they become socially and politically conscious over time, which puts pressure on the government to perform well. They can initiate a changing mindset and free people from the shackles of cynicism and habits of criticising the country without participating in change and improving the situation by voting in greater numbers.
