Question

Writing Assignment #2: Making Arguments

TASK: Write an essay of argumentation--that is, an essay in which

you take a stand on a controversial issue. For example, you might

argue for or against making condoms available to junior high school

students in Washington; you might argue for or against stricter animal

rights legislation; you might argue for or against the national

legalization of marijuana. These are only a few examples, and all of

them have been submitted by many students before you-

beware of re-treading on familiar ground! Try to choose a topic

that is contemporary-that is, not "dated."

But whatever you write about, your position must not be merely

subjective--it must be supported by reasons and evidence. You must

do research to support your claim, and cite at least four sources,

carefully adhering to MLA citation method, which is presented in

your handbook. You may use websites as sources, but at least three

of the required four sources must be periodical sources from

online databases such as ProQuest, available to you through the

GRCC library. If you're not clear about the difference between a

website and a database, don't gamble! See a GRCC librarian.

In addition, you must seriously consider the quality of your

sources-please read the following set of basic considerations for

evaluating the resources you'll use in the essay:
