The textbook focuses on six key segements in the external

environment (demographic, sociocultural, political/legal,

technological, economic, and global). Discuss a time when

a firm (or any organization) failed to consider one of these

factors in their strategic decision-making. Be sure to

mention both what the firm failed to consider (and which

segment(s) that corresponds to) as well as why this

oversight was ultimately impactful.

The book talks about the "balanced scorecard" which

enables managers to consider their business from four key

perspectives: customer, internal, innovation and learning,

and financial. Give one example of a firm that is successful

but has struggled to overcome some weaknesses relating to

those four perspectives. What actions do you think they

should take moving forward to address this (and why)?

The five forces identified by Porter have long been used as

an industry attractiveness test. If you were to create a sixth

force, what would it be and why? Make sure that you

T

differentiate your new force from any of the already existing

forces which may seem to be related.
