a comprehensive characterisation of the rock mass and the rock material (including useful comments and appropriate
observations of results obtained).
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
To conduct any activity in the Civil Engineering laboratory (ED building) you need to have successfully completed
(100%) the "Civil, Surveying and Environmental Engineering induction Quiz" available in Canvas within the
Assignments modules.
• A block of limestone rock has been prepared for completion of this Assessment for CIVL4230/6230. The block is
located in the Civil Engineering laboratory (ED building - G06 strong floor) (Figure 3).
●
The Schmidt hammer (Type L) available from the University Civil lab (and located in Anna's office) can be used for
your assignment. Consider Figures 4 and 5 and ROCK SCHMIDT OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS provided with the
Assignment (Proceq) to obtain appropriate estimation. Consider testing with the hammer perpendicular to the test
surface.
Roughness measurements can be conducted using Barton Comb (profilometer). Some profilometers are available for
CIVL4230/6230 students in the Civil Lab (ED Building). They are placed in a box beside the limestone rock.
For your report: you can consider taking photos and/or videos of your lab investigations (if any) and including them
as Figures and/or appendixes of your final Assignment 1 report.
