Lab 1 - AutoCAD Dimensioning, Title Blocks, and Paper Space
CIVE 103 Laboratory Exercise
Your completed drawing should be saved to your U drive. You will be uploading
your completed drawing (.dwg) and pdf(s) into Canvas for grading.
The purpose of this lab is to become familiar with the AutoCAD interface and to
introduce dimensioning, title blocks, and paper space. You will be working on the
drawing LastName_FI_Lab_1.dwg.
Procedure
1. Open AutoCAD.
2. Save the drawing LastName_FI_Lab_1.dwg from Canvas to your U-drive as your
LastName_FI_Lab_1.dwg. Open this drawing. The file includes one drawing.
You need to add a second drawing, shown at the end of these instructions.
3. Use the layer manager (la) to create layers A1_Dim and A2_Dim for the
dimensions of each object. Make the color of these layers yellow and their
lineweight 0.20mm. The TA will explain lineweights and their use. Make layer
Al Dim the current layer.

Add your second drawing, shown below, do not add the dimensions yet, they
come in later steps. Your TA will assist in adding this drawing.
5. The first type of dimensioning we will use will be annotative dimensioning. The
TA will explain this feature of AutoCAD and when its use is preferred.

Type in d to bring up the dimension style manager. Click on New to create a new
dimension style. Name this style CIVE103-A, start with Standard, make sure the
box next to Annotative is clicked and click on Continue. Under the Symbols
and Arrows tab, make sure the Center Marks option is None. Under the Text
tab, change the text height to 0.10. Under the Primary Units tab, change the
precision for both linear and angular dimensions to 0.00. Click OK. In the
dimension style manager that is still open, click on the dimension style you just
created and then click on Set Current. Finally click Close.
7. In the properties window (or using the bottom toolbar), set the annotative scale of
the drawing for model space to 1:2, as this will be the scale we use for most of our
viewports in paper space.
8. The dimensioning buttons can be found in the ribbon under the Annotate tab.
Dimension the object as shown in the figure below.
9. Now change the annotative scale to 1:1 using the bottom toolbar and dimension
the upper right portion of figure A2. Be sure to include a typical dimension for the
fillet radius (rounded corner of the figure).
10. The next type of dimensioning we will use will be standard with a dimension
scale. The TA will explain the features of this type of dimensioning and when its
use is preferred.

11. Type in d to bring up the dimension style manager. Click on New to create a new
dimension style. Name this style CIVE103-DS, start with Standard, make sure
the box next to Annotative is NOT clicked and click on Continue. Under the
Symbols and Arrows tab, make sure the Center Marks option is None. Under
the Text tab, change the text height to 0.10. Under the Primary Units tab,
change the precision for both linear and angular dimensions to 0.00. Click OK.
In the dimension style manager that is still open, click on the dimension style you
just created and then click on Set Current. Finally click Close.
12. Change the current layer to A2_Dim.
13. Now we will set our dimension scale. The general rule is if the scale of our
viewport in paper space is 1/4" = 1'-0", then our dimension scale will be 12"
divided by 1/4", or 48. So for a viewport scale of 1/8” = 1’-0”, our dimension
scale will be 12" divided by 1/8", or 96. For a viewport scale in the form of 1:2,
the general rule for our dimension scale will be 1 multiplied by 2, or 2. So for a
viewport scale of 1:50, our dimension scale should be 50. The viewport for the
second object will be at a 1:2 scale, so our dimension scale should be set to two.
To do this type in dimscale and set the scale to 2 (alternative to using properties).
14. Fully dimension the second object (A2). The TA will explain how to create a
radius dimension without a leader.
15. Now we will begin to work in paper space. The TA will explain the concept of
paper space.
16. Select the Layout1 tab. Right click over the Layout 1 tab and select Page Setup
Manager. Make sure *Layout1* is highlighted and click on Modify. Choose the
printer as Adobe PDF (or another PDF printing option), the paper size as
Letter (8.5 x 11 inches), the plot style table to monochrome.ctb, and the
drawing orientation to Landscape. Click Ok and then click Close.
17. Rename the Layout1 sheet to Object_A1. You can do this by right clicking on
the Layout 1 tab or by using the properties window.
18. Now we are ready to start working with our paper space layout. Note that you
can change the color of the background of your paper space just like we did for
model space in the previous labs (type options -> display -> colors -> select
"Sheet/layout" -> change the color). Also, note that the dotted line denotes the
printable area in paper space. This dotted line cannot be selected or deleted and
will not print.
19. Select and delete the existing viewport.
20. Use your layer manager to create a new layer called PS_TitleBlock. Change its
color to white and its lineweight to 0.20. Make this the current layer.
21. Each company will almost always have its own standard title block, but they all
have common features. The TA will highlight these features. Create a rectangle
of length 10 and height 7.75 that fits within the printing limits (dashed line) and
change the global width to 0.07 (type “PL” -> specify the start point for the line
-> type "w" and enter 0.07 -> hit enter twice -> continue drawing lines). Draw a
pline at (-1.5,0) from the upper right corner of your rectangle and vertically down

to intersect the bottom edge of the rectangle. Draw another pline, located 3.75
down from the top of the last pline, over horizontally until it intersects the right
edge of your rectangle. Change the global width of both the lines you just drew to
0.035 (hint: see properties window, or use “plinewid”). Offset the horizontal line
you just drew at 1.5 below and then offset this line at 0.5 four times below. Create
a new mtext and change the size to 0.10 in the toolbar (top left). In the top box
type: "General Notes: All units are in inches." Copy this mtext into each of the
boxes below. Change the text to the following (in order): "Revisions: No. Date",
"Drawing title: Object A1", "Date: Today's Date", "Approved By:", "Drawn By:
Your Initials", "Drawing No. CIVE 103.001".
ALTERNATIVE: you TA can show how to import an existing Title Block given
in the assignment. Do this for the title block on the second sheet.
22. Make Defpoints the current layer. Your TA will explain the layer Defpoints and
its features.
23. Type mview to create a new viewport. Click toward the upper left corner of the
print space within our title block, and then click toward the bottom right corner to
finish creating our viewport.
24. Select the viewport we just created. In the properties window, change its
Annotation Scale and Standard Scale to 1:2. Notice how only annotative
dimensions with a scale of 1:2 appear in the viewport while all standard
dimensions appear regardless of the dimension scale. Adjust the size of your
viewport and the location of its corners to see all of Object A1. You can also
double click inside the viewport to pan (do not zoom this will change the scale
of the viewport!). This activates model space. To deactivate the viewport double
click outside of the box. Once you have the object placed correctly, change the
Display Locked to yes in properties. The TA will explain the difference between
having the display locked and unlocked. Move (m) the viewport so that it is once
again within the print space of our title block.
25. Type mview and create a second viewport.
26. Select the viewport we just created. In the properties window, change its
Annotation Scale and Standard Scale to 1:1. Notice how only annotative
dimensions with a scale of 1:1 appear in the viewport while all standard
dimensions appear regardless of the dimension scale. Once you have these scales
set, change the Display Locked to yes. Adjust the size of your viewport and the
location of its corners to see the top right corner of Object A1. Move (m) the
viewport so that it is once again within the print space of our title block and out of
the way of the first viewport. Change the layer of this viewport to layer 0.
27. Use your layer manager to create a new layer called PS_Text. Make its color red.
Make this the current layer. Be sure that printing is enabled for this layer.
28. Create an mtext (with text size 0.10) to label the object with the title: Object Al
[enter] Scale 1:2. Underline "Object mtA1" and center the text. Move the label to
the bottom center of the viewport.

29. Add a new layout for Object A2, Drawing CIVE103.002 by right clicking on the
layout you edited, selecting "move or copy", check the create a copy box and
select okay. Change the name of the layout and update the title block and label for
the viewport using an imported block (see step 21). Unlock the viewport, pan and
adjust the size for the second drawing.
30. While in layout space go to the AutoCAD icon in the upper left corner and select
print from the dropdown menu. If you set up page layout properly you should
simply be able to hit okay and the pdf of your layout will be saved.
31. Save your completed drawing(s). Upload both the .dwg file of your completed
drawing(s) and the pdf(s) you created to Canvas under the correct assignment.
