MAIN INSTRUCTIONS Assignment: New or Evolved Product Manufacture and Launch - 3000 words. The assignment requires you to plan the production and introduction of a new product using a concurrent engineering approach. You should consider your product to be new to the market or at least a new variant of an existing product. You must first decide on a product, it may be a: mobile phone, computer, electric drill, food mixer, electric kettle, pen, watch or anything you choose. Whichever product you select, it should have at least 10 component parts so that you are able to plan its production and describe the process planning requirements. If you select a complex product like an automobile, you can restrict your process planning to one of its sub-assemblies. Also describe the design of the product development. You are expected to cost out the project from the initial concept stage to delivery of the product. This includes the design of the product, design and creation of the manufacturing facilities; the cost of manufacturing operations; sales and delivery. You must explain whether you will manufacture in your own factory or sub-contract the manufacture, how and where the product will be assembled? Whatever you decide to do, I still require the process planning and method of manufacture to be described. Also if you subcontract the manufacture I want to know how you will protect your product so that it cannot be stolen by the sub-contractors. You need to imagine that you have decided to invest your own money into this project and this will motivate you to make the new product introduction and launch a success. An important decision is to decide the price that the product will sell for and also the anticipated volume of annual sales. You also need to decide on your profit margin in order to evaluate your budget. You should make sketches of your product, it would be good to do this using our CAD facilities but it is also acceptable to provide hand drawn sketches I expect to see the following sections in the essay, the percentages indicate the proportion of the mark that can be obtained for each section 1. Drawings of the product & component parts 5% 2. A section on the design, prototyping and test strategy, the materials used should be specified and justified for each component part. 10% 3. Description and justification of the manufacturing processes used to produce each component. 35% 4. Design of the manufacturing facilities & protection of the product if subcontracted. 15% 5. Description of the business management software tools that you will use . 5% 6. Cost analysis over a 3 year period to estimate the profit. 15% 7. Environmental protection strategy. 5% 8.
