Problem 3: Tank Pressure Safety

Your supervisor asks you to employ an old tank with a volume of 60 L, but he has concerns regarding its mechanical

resistance to pressure for use in a modified process. The tank was originally rated for a maximum pressure of 36 bar

(absolute). It has been established that for a safe operation (no risk of bursting), you are never to exceed half the

maximum pressure specification of the tank. The plan is to use this tank to store a maximum of 1000 g of ethane at a

maximum temperature of 450 K. Check whether you will be able to use this tank safely (no bursting) or not by

performing calculations with the following methods:

A) Ideal gas law

B) Lee-Kesler charts

C) Virial equation
