Task 2.5 Describe and apply Bernoulli's principle to engineering fluid problems

A)

i) State Bernoulli's equation and define all the terms.

ii) Provide a brief written account of one practical application of Bernoulli's principle. You should use the principle/equation to explain how/why a fluid behaves as it does in your chosen application.

B) Water is flowing in a fire hose with a velocity of 1.0 m/s and a pressure of 200kPa. At the nozzle the pressure decreases to atmospheric pressure (101300 Pa). Assume that there is no change in height. Use the Bernoulli equation to calculate the velocity of the water exiting the nozzle. Take the density of water as 1000 kg/m³.

C) Ethanol fuel is flowing through a pipe at an oil refinery at a velocity of 1m/s and a pressure of 101300 Pa. The refinery needs the ethanol to be at a pressure of 2 atm (202600 Pa) and on a lowerlevel. How far must the pipe drop in height in order to achieve this pressure? Assume the velocity does not change. The density of ethanol is 789 kg/m3 and take the acceleration due to gravity, g, as 9.8 m/s2.
