Writing a medical factsheet. The order of the contents of a factsheet are: 1. An abstract - this is a short section about the contents of the factsheet with appropriate scientific vocabulary. You must include at least one citation in this section. 2. An introduction - this is a general introduction to the topic. This may include the causes, prevalence, and symptoms of the disease. 3. The history of the medical topic. You could include a timeline for this. 4. The latest research on the medical topic, for example, the use of stem cell technology or gene therapy. 5. The main section should include the science of the medical topic and there should be a development of the scientific ideas. • • This must include the theory (which may include a law) about the topic e.g. if you are writing about a nervous/neurological disorder e.g. Alzheimer's disease, you should write about how information is passed down a neurone and how this is then transferred from one neurone to another across the synapse. This may include discussion of the factors affecting the speed of transmission. This section should include a detailed account of the topic e.g. the science/biology involved in the disease e.g. the formation of plaques and tangles of proteins in the brain, the development of tangles known as tau, the role of acetylcholinesterase enzyme). The science should be at level 3. This section must include at least two embedded pieces of relevant information from sources (e.g. diagrams, tables of data, graphs, charts) and these must have appropriate captions and be cited. • You must create a table, graph, or diagram of your own. This should be relevant to the topic e.g. you may use a table of data to create a graph of your own. This information must have a caption. • Any tables should have a heading "Table 1: diagrams should have a heading "Figure 1:..... " and any graphs, charts or • This section must include in-text citations for at least three different categories of sources. 6. The social, ethical, economic, and environmental issues. You should mention at least three of these issues, giving the positive and/or negative impacts of each e.g. when using stem cells, there will be both benefits and risks of such technology. 7. A few concluding sentences about the future of the topic. • For example, what is the future for the cure of the disease? What techniques will be used in the future? 8. A bibliography or reference list. • At least three different sources from three different categories (e.g. book, journal, website) are required. ● All sources should use the Harvard convention for referencing and should be in alphabetical order. Word count: Around 1000-1200 and does not include any words used in tables, diagrams or references. If you exceed this word count, then all information needs to be relevant
