Introduction Breastfeeding has many physical and psychological advantages for both mothers and babies. The study aims to find the impact of breastfeeding on "postpartum depression and anxiety, and how it affects the development of the child" (p. 2). Making people more aware of the benefits of breastfeeding is the main purpose of the study. Method The study had 197 puerperea and 209 pregnant women. Apart from it, 160 women were included after the third month of their delivery. The participants were randomly selected in Đakovština, Croatia. This primary study used questionnaires to record the responses of the participants. It had questions regarding childbirth, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. The study also used three instruments and they were Beck's Depression Inventory or BDI, the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale or EPDS, and the "Beck's Anxiety Inventory" or BAI. Statistical analysis was done by using the SPSS software. From the analysis, various results have been found. Results The results of the study have highlighted a variety of things. It was found that 89.2 percent of mothers in the chosen population breastfeed their children. However, the percentage dropped significantly after three months of getting discharged from the hospitals. After deep analysis, various results have come up. First of all, mothers who have a low risk of Postpartum depression, have been found to be breastfeeding their children more than mothers who have a mild or significant risk of perinatal depression. The results in the BDI scale indicate that "mean values on the BDI scale three months after giving birth were higher in mothers who did not breastfeed (M = 3.53) than those who breastfed their children (M = 2.28)" (p. 5). "Beck's Anxiety Inventory" or BAI was used for measuring postpartum anxiety among the mothers. From the scale, it is found that the anxiety of mothers is negatively correlated with the "duration of breastfeeding". A detailed discussion of the results can give birth to new theories and concepts. Discussion and conclusion The study tried to investigate the impact of breastfeeding on the mental health (especially depression) of mothers. These problems are the reasons why the percentage of breastfeeding mothers drops significantly after a few months of childbirth. However, this study has found that "Non Breastfeeding mothers are more depressed and anxious compared to breastfeeding mothers" (p. 6). The study recommends a longitudinal study in the future to understand the relationship between depression and breastfeeding in a better way.
